Yea sex is great but have you ever backed off the throttle around 5k sitting behind two side draft carburetors?
I’m sporting twin Weber 40mm DCOE carbs on the 02 with the mid stacks (identical to those pictured above). They’ve got the individual foam filters on each stack, and they’re looking pretty tattered. The local 02 Guru said that I should “take them off” before they catch on fire. I asked what he recommended and he said that he doesn’t run filters on any of his 4 2002's! This guy definitely knows what he is talking about but he is also forever working on these cars. I’d imagine he could rebuild an M10 blindfolded. So the possible consequences don’t hold the same weight for him.
He and others have advised against the little screen cap filters saying that they are too restrictive. He said someone makes an airbox with a snorkel in which all 4 velocity stacks would seat. This is probably my best bet, but it’s expensive and while it isn’t ugly, I wanna see them stacks! He said that unless I’m driving on “back roads” I don’t need to run filters. I’m guessing he means dirt/gravel roads as he referred to everything else as the track or the street.
So what say ye? Live wild and free or cover em up? If the answer is cover em up, what filter type do you like?
UPDATE: I’m getting this

I would get more foam filters. Safe enough and easy to take off. I have seen quite a few 2002s running with stacks and it’s about 50/50 whether they go naked or foam. I just don’t like to risk my shit if I don’t have to so I would stay on that side. Also, I imagine a lot of those guys had them off for the cars and coffee but run then on the street.

I wouldn’t run no filters unless the engine is disposable to you, and even then you can only bore cylinders so many times on a rebuilt before the block is scrap. I wouldn’t run foam either. As it breaks down, it gets sucked through the air pump it’s attached to. A K&N square filter for Webers works great.
These are pretty standard in the racecar world where lots of things still run Webers like yours.

I almost always recommend covering everything your not prepared to replace. Living on the edge is great til repair bills make it difficult to live in the middle. After a few cars and a few more bikes worth of experience, I can say that big boy toys are like kids, and will put anything in their mouths.

Something like this but cut down for the smaller engine.
My dad’s car has webbers and he just uses tow pieces of 1/8" aluminum and sandwich’s a big filter between them. It’s kind of a hack job but it works.

It’s four big vacuum cleaner nozzles. Who knows what the vacuum’s gonna suck into an expensive, cramped place?
For my money, I’d run some more foam... or something.

Well, it’s the “right” solution. Sometimes doing the right thing involves a big check I guess. Ouch.

I’d look for a nice big foam filter with a backingplate, this way you can take off the filter to show the Trumpets, while not having the individual small filters.
I planned to do this to a BX Sport (twin dual choke Solex carbs), but sadly the deal on the car fell through. It did sound amazing even with a plenum and panel filter damping the sounds...

Seems like the right answer. I’ve got a triple set of side draft Mikunis on an old L28. No stacks though. Individual canister air cleaners on those big boys, too. I think the carbs are worth more than the L28...

Back in my Honda days when TWM ITBs were the holy grail NA setup, the combo with them was an ITG filter. TWM is apparently now Borla Induction but ITG is its own company. I believe one of these for each carb would do the trick.

Balancing and tuning them? PITA.
Full on, full bore? A symphony for the ears. That was a great (if heavy) engine.

Yeah I’m very new to balancing/tuning I’m trying to find someone who will spend a few hours with me on it. I think this crazy that runs no filters is going to. My inde doesn’t charge much for it but I know it’s something I can do on my own.

I have a steady flow of car parts coming in for the next two weeks. Excitement level is HIGH! Unfortunately, most if is Golf R suspension components for the Alltrack. Components that I won’t be able to install until I buy the expensive bits (springs and shocks). I’m betting the last thing to arrive will be this airbox.

Cool, bear in mind I haven’t done extensive looking into which exact ITG filter would fit your carbs, but something along those lines.

That would certainly work. Sure is pricey.
